A couple of sites good for pre-move research, pre-search if I may.

-no longer updated but a good resource for non-native New Yorkers

-not updated very often, but worth reading

-Wired's forum with consistant updates since 2005

-Apparently, this is a good one, but I'm a little hesitant to pay for it.

meed your mod!
Hi everyone!
My name is Ashley and I created this community because I couldn't find a similar one. There are a lot of great New York lj communities out there but it's a little isolating when you're the only member not within city boundaries (who isn't asking for tourist info.) Although tourists are welcome here, the primary reason for this community is not for giving out hotel deals. That is what travel agents and guidebooks are for (Pick up a Lonely Planet guide and you'll be set.) If the NFT guide is more your style, then you're at the right place.
Moving is always hard to do but the move to New York seems harder. With extreme competition for jobs and apartments, it can be pretty daunting. If you don't know where to start, just make a post and we'll guide and support each other (as long as you describe the actual move with extreme detail.

A little about myself...
I've always been a city girl. After a three day visit in October 2005, I decided that I was going to move to New York as soon as I could. I don't take this lightly, though. I have a very realistic picture of the city, its demands, and my abilities. Apartment broker websites have become my porn. I search Monster.com at least twice a week. I'm in my last semester at Michigan State University and I'm probably going to return to Japan and teach English for a year or so to save up some money and get some on-the-job experience. Although I haven't made the move physically, I'm there mentally. I've accumulated a ridiculous mass of resources and I figured I should share them. Since we're not actually in the city yet, any SPAM will be removed. Your show flyers only remind us that we are not yet there and it makes me feel sick.
So, treat each other with respect and good luck with your moves.
